Project GOAL Receives U.S. Soccer Foundation Grant

[Providence, Rhode Island] – The U.S. Soccer Foundation has awarded a grant to Project GOAL  to support its mission to leverage the development of New England’s disadvantaged inner city youth through after-school tutoring, health education, and soccer-related programs.

On February 3, 2012 the U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, awarded sixty grants totaling $2.4 million to non-profit organizations serving youth in urban, underserved areas in twenty states across the nation.  Since being established in 1994, the U.S. Soccer Foundation has awarded more than $55 million to non-profit organizations in all 50 states.

Through the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s 2012 Annual Grants program, the Foundation strives to continue its mission of enhancing and growing the sport of soccer as well as improving the well-being of children in underserved areas.  Grant awards support the programming and equipment needs of non-profit organizations that provide children with the opportunity to play soccer and live a healthy lifestyle.

In addition to providing grants to support soccer programs, the U.S. Soccer Foundation awarded eighteen Synthetic Field Building grants to develop new FieldTurf soccer fields around the country. Supported by adidas, FieldTurf and MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer’s community outreach program, the Synthetic Field Building program provides safe places for children to play in at-risk communities.

“Project GOAL is extremely encouraged and honored to have been selected by the Foundation for this special grant,” as explained by Darius Shirzadi, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Project GOAL.  Our selection by the Foundation who is the representative charitable body for soccer in the United States is a continued affirmation that what we are accomplishing with our student athletes is being recognized on a national level.  We are very appreciative of this recognition.”

“The U.S. Soccer Foundation is honored to support initiatives that give children in underserved urban communities access to soccer programs that encourage positive physical and social development,” said Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “All children should have the opportunity to be involved with programs that promote active, healthy lifestyles and that provide an alternative to the many negative influences children face today.”

Support for the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Annual Grants program is provided by the Foundation’s Corporate Partners’ Council, a cohort of soccer industry leaders including Eurosport, FieldTurf, Hunter Industries, Musco Sports Lighting, PEVO Sports and Sport Court.

Project GOAL Student Selected Prefect for Second Year In A Row

June 26, 2010

Servi Barrientos, Eric Lara, and Luis Navas graduation from the Rocky Hill School (East Greenwich, RI)

Miguel Lara from 2005

PROVIDENCE, R.I.

Project GOAL continues to push its students to their limits to be the best students, athletes, and people they can be.  Project GOAL students who received scholarships to attend Rhode Island area private schools through Project GOAL’s assistance are demonstrating leadership qualities in their schools.  Project GOAL also continues to place students who show academic and athletic excellence into private schools, on scholarship, despite the current state of the economy.

Miguel Lara, of Pawtucket, has been selected as one of four prefects for the 2009/2010 school year at the Rocky Hill School.  Miguel has been attending Rocky Hill (East Greenwich, RI) since 2008.  This is the second year in a row that a Project GOAL student has been selected as a Prefect.  The previous year it was Luis Navas who graduated and will be attending the Rhode Island School of Design in the fall.

Catherine Washburn, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at the Rocky Hill School commented, “At Rocky Hill School prefects are members of the entering senior class chosen by vote of the Upper School faculty and Upper School student body and appointed by the Headmaster. Selection is based on qualities of maturity, loyalty and leadership. Prefects serve on the Disciplinary Committee, an Advisory Committee to the Dean of Student Life, the Head of Upper School and the Headmaster, and as mentors to incoming ninth grade students.

Prefects hold the highest position at Rocky Hill School. They represent our School’s core values of honesty, integrity, and respect, as well as empathy and understanding. Luis Navas (Prefect 2009-10) and Miguel (Prefect 2010-11) embody the ideals of a Rocky Hill Prefect and I am confident that Project GOAL provided them the positive influence and opportunities to be recognized as outstanding role-models and student leaders.

This past year, Luis went above and beyond our expectations as a compassionate listener and unselfish Prefect. He often met with students on a regular basis to make sure things were going well for them.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Project GOAL will receive a $10,000 donation from The Adalius Thomas Foundation as a result of The 2nd Annual Adalius Thomas Evening, a charity dinner and auction, held at Camille’s Restaurant (Providence, RI) in December 2008. The Adalius Thomas Foundation, founded in 2002, is a non-profit organization that organizes and funds many different events and programs for children. “Being part of the NFL has taught me that if you have the opportunity to give back to the community, you do so with integrity and compassion. No one suffers more from poverty and poor education than today’s children. Being a father myself, I understand how much a loving, nuturing childhood can make all the difference. So, I set out to create a foundation dedicated to just this purpose….enriching the lives of children” – Patriots Linebacker Adalius Thomas.

“We feel extremely happy and fortunate to be a beneficiary of Adalius’ foundation. These funds will continue to provide our students with necessary elements of our program like transportation, tutoring, equipment, and food, free of charge” – Darius Shirzadi, Executive Director and Co-Founder.

Here are pictures from the visit by Jeff Larentowicz of the New England Revolution to Project GOAL on Tuesday May 5, 2009 at the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island. Jeff spent time with the group of 50 kids explaining his years in elementary, middle, high school, and college leading up to him being selected by the Revolution in the MLS Draft. He went into depth about his academic career, grades, hours of study vs his love and dedication to soccer. He also spent time with kids individually to talk, take pictures, and sign autographs.
